OR Tambo Dialogue

Read more ...On Monday the 20 October 2014 the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) hosted a round table dialogue on the life of Oliver Reginald Tambo. The dialogue was aimed at appreciating the legendary stalwart and his invaluable contribution to the history of South Africa.


A distinguished panel of speakers which included the current Mayor of the City of Johannesburg who is also the Chairperson of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in Gauteng: Cllr. Parks Tau, addressed an audience who were taken through the life of the great stalwart and all the key periods in which he left an indelible mark on the African National Congress and the struggle against apartheid.

The first ever OR Tambo Games Website

Read more ...The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng and the Municipal Manager of Sedibeng District Municipality, Mr Yunus Chamda were present at the official launch of the all new, purpose built OR Tambo Games Website. The launch was held during the Sedibeng Local Organising Committee (LOC) meeting on the 2 October 2014.


The Executive Mayor said that he is very proud that Sedibeng is the first hosting Municipality to introduce a dedicated website for the games which can be used by participants and spectators alike.

Read more ...It is with great honour that I present to you the 8th Annual SALGA Inter-Municipal Games in 2014, the year in which South Africa also celebrates 20 years of Freedom and democracy. This momentous occasion presents the perfect platform to honour Oliver Tambo, one of the stalwarts whose sacrifices led to South Africa being able to celebrate these 20 years of freedom. Similarly, this yearalso presents us all with an opportunity to reflect on how our democracy and freedom were achieved, the progress that has been made and how we plan to work together towards implementing and achieving Vision 2030.

Read more ...I welcome both the Leadership of all regions in Gauteng and the staff of our visiting municipalities to the Sedibeng region. We are proud to be the host of the 8th Annual SALGA OR Tambo Inter-Municipal Games. Municipalities from across Gauteng will be competing in a variety of sporting activities on the 24 October 2014. The preparations for this year’s games have gone according to plan while staff from the municipalities across Gauteng have been practicing and preparing themselves in the last few months, in their different sporting codes.

Read more ...The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) is proud to be a partner of the 8th SALGA Gauteng OR Tambo Inter-Municipality Games to be held in the Sedibeng District Municipality on the 24th October 2014. The Games will be held at the Isak Steyl Stadium, which hosts most of the Games high-profile sport events. It is indeed a fitting tribute to commemorate the memory of former ANC President Oliver Tambo in October, as he was born on the 27th October 1917.

About the OR Tambo Games

Read more ...The O.R Tambo Inter-Municipality Games were conceptualised by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Gauteng Provincial Office in 2006 in honour of the late stalwart of the African National Congress, Oliver Reginald Tambo’s contribution to the liberation of South Africa. The games coincide with Tambo’s birth month, October, and also serve as a platform to foster relations between municipal employees and their Councillors.

Profile of Oliver Reginald Tambo

Read more ...Oliver Reginald Kaizana Tambo (OR) was born in the village of Kantilla, Bizana, in the Mpondoland (eQawukeni), region of the Eastern Cape, on 27 October 1917. His mother, Julia, was the third wife of Mzimeni Tambo, son of a farmer and an assistant salesperson at a local trading store. His father had four wives and ten children and, although illiterate, lived comfortably. Mzimeni Tambo was a traditionalist, but also saw the importance of Western education. Later, Mzimeni converted to Christianity while Oliver's mother was already a devout Christian.

Profile of Adelaide Tambo

Read more ...Adelaide Frances Tambo (nee Tshukudu) was born on 18 July 1929 in Top Location, Vereeniging, in the Vaal Triangle. Tambo attended the St Thomas Practising School in Johannesburg and Orlando High. She worked as a nurse at the Pretoria General Hospital and at an old people's home in London.

Adelaide Tambo’s political life started at the age of 10 after a raid by the police, following a riot in Top Location, Vereeniging. A police officer had been killed, and Adelaide's ailing grandfather, aged 82, was among those who were arrested and taken to the town square.
